How this helps your business

To find who supplies your business energy, enter your postcode in the tool above: it returns your electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and your Gas Distribution Network (GDN) instantly, and then lets us confirm the actual suppliers registered against your meters. The reason there is no single free website that names your supplier from a postcode alone is that supplier records sit in the regulated industry databases (the ECOES and MPAS systems for electricity, and Find My Supplier and Xoserve MPRS for gas), not in any public directory.

The number printed on your business electricity bill is the MPAN, a 21-digit electricity supply number that begins with an “S”. Its first two digits are the Distribution ID that identifies your DNO region, which is the network owner, not your supplier. For business gas, the equivalent identifier is the MPRN (also called the M number), a 6 to 10 digit reference for the gas supply point. Both numbers appear on your bill, not on the meter itself, and both tell the networks which premises you are, but neither reveals which company you can switch to without a record lookup.

This is the distinction that trips up most businesses: the DNO and GDN maintain the wires and pipes and respond to emergencies, while your supplier is the company that buys energy on the wholesale market and invoices you for it. You cannot change your network operator, it is fixed by your location, but you can absolutely change your supplier. If you have recently moved into a premises or your contract has lapsed, you may be on a deemed or out-of-contract rate with whoever supplied the previous occupier. Those rates are usually the most expensive a supplier offers, which is exactly why identifying your supplier and contract end date matters.

Once you know your network, the next step is confirming the registered supplier, the contract end date and the current rate. Purely Energy does this for you free of charge through a Letter of Authority, which lets us query the industry databases on your behalf. We manage energy across 2,000+ UK sites and more than £100M of annual spend for over 500 business clients, with 30+ suppliers on our panel. Because we work for you, not the suppliers, and take no hidden commissions, we tender your contract to secure typical savings of 15 to 30%. As a B-Corp certified consultancy, transparency is the point: we tell you who supplies you, what you are paying, and what you should be paying.

For multi-site portfolios the picture is more involved, since every meter can sit with a different supplier on a different end date. We consolidate that into a single view so nothing rolls onto expensive out-of-contract rates unnoticed. If you only need the network detail, our UK energy network lookup maps every DNO and GDN region in the country. When you are ready to act on what you find, you can request a business energy quote and our team will confirm your suppliers and call you back during business hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DNO the same as my business energy supplier?
No. The Distribution Network Operator (DNO) owns and maintains the electricity wires to your premises, and the Gas Distribution Network (GDN) owns the gas pipes. Neither bills you and you cannot switch them. Your supplier is the separate company that invoices you for the energy you use, and that is the company you can change.
Who is my business electricity supplier and how do I find them?
Your business electricity supplier is the company named on your bill. To find it without a bill, you can contact your DNO, whose records show the supplier registered against your MPAN, or let Purely Energy retrieve it via a free Letter of Authority. The first two digits of your 21-digit MPAN identify the DNO region, not the supplier.
Who is my business gas supplier and how do I find them?
Your business gas supply is identified by its MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number), a 6 to 10 digit number on your bill. To find the registered gas supplier you can use the national Find My Supplier service at findmysupplier.energy, call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524, check a recent bill, or let Purely Energy confirm it for you.
How do I find my energy supplier without a bill?
For electricity, contact your DNO, which holds the registered supplier against your MPAN. For gas, use Find My Supplier at findmysupplier.energy or call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524. If you have just moved into a business premises, the previous occupier's supplier usually becomes your deemed (out-of-contract) supplier until you arrange a new contract. Purely Energy can retrieve all of this for you free of charge.
Can a business switch its energy supplier?
Yes. Any UK business can switch electricity and gas supplier when its current contract ends, and many sites that have rolled onto deemed or out-of-contract rates can move sooner. Out-of-contract rates are typically the most expensive tariff a supplier offers, so identifying your supplier and contract end date is the first step to securing a better rate.
Why does my contract end date matter?
Your contract end date sets the window in which you can switch supplier or renegotiate. Most business energy contracts have a fixed term and a renewal notice period, and missing that window can roll you onto expensive out-of-contract rates. Knowing your supplier and end date lets Purely Energy time the market and tender your contract for typical savings of 15 to 30%.
Is this supplier lookup tool free for businesses?
Yes. The interactive lookup tool is completely free and instantly returns your electricity and gas network operators from your postcode. Having Purely Energy confirm your actual registered suppliers, contract end dates and current rates via a Letter of Authority is also free and carries no obligation. We work for you, not the suppliers, with no hidden commissions.
