Hendon School is a state-funded secondary academy in the London Borough of Barnet, with a capacity of 1,269 pupils aged 11 to 18. It is a busy, much-loved school in the heart of the community, but it sits in a building that dates back to 1914, which brings its own challenges when it comes to upgrades for energy efficiency. For a school working to a tight budget, every pound spent on energy is a pound that cannot go back to the pupils.

The Challenge

Climbing bills, in a building they couldn't change

The bills coming into Hendon School were going up, and the team knew something wasn't right. As a state-funded school with a budget that was already being stretched, every pound mattered, but they had no way of knowing where the money was going or why the energy bills kept creeping up.

The building itself offered no easy answers either. As a listed property, the original pane glass could not be replaced, and the upgrades most schools would reach for, new windows or better insulation, were simply out of the question. The only place left to look was to investigate their energy usage.

Everything fell into place once we installed Purely Insights, our energy monitoring software. With a clear view of consumption across the site, we got straight on the phone with the site manager and finance team to walk them through what the data was telling us.

From there, the real collaboration kicked in. Together, we traced the wastage back to the specific rooms and systems behind it, and put simple new habits in place to make sure energy was only being used when needed.

The savings showed up in the data almost straight away. After two months of monitoring, we found that overnight gas use had fallen from 8,260.2 kWh to 6,062.80 kWh, a 26.6% drop. That works out at £88.56 a week, or £4,605.12 a year, back into the school's budget.

The savings were not the only win, either. Using the reporting from our Purely Insights dashboard, the school was able to document the operational changes they had made and put together a strong application for additional funding.
