Business energy broker FAQs
What a business energy broker does, how brokers are paid, and what a whole-of-market energy brokerage like Purely Energy can save you.
What is a business energy broker?
A business energy broker buys energy on your behalf instead of you dealing with suppliers one by one. A whole-of-market energy brokerage tenders your gas and electricity across a panel of suppliers, negotiates the unit rates and standing charges, and manages the contract from quote to renewal. Purely Energy works for you, not the suppliers, so the recommendation follows the best deal rather than the biggest commission. See how our business energy procurement service works, or get a business energy quote.
What does an energy broker actually do?
More than find a cheaper unit rate. A good energy broker reads your usage profile, tenders across the supplier panel, negotiates contract terms, validates your invoices for billing errors, diarises the renewal window so you never roll onto out-of-contract rates, and advises on timing against the wholesale market. For larger users that extends to flexible purchasing, half-hourly data and strategic procurement across multiple sites.
How do energy brokers get paid?
Two ways. Either a commission is built into the unit rate the supplier quotes, or you pay the broker a fixed fee and take a lower rate. Neither is wrong, but the amount should be visible before you sign. Purely Energy sets out how we are paid in writing on every contract and takes no preferred-supplier kickbacks, which is what lets us tender the whole market rather than a favoured few. Read more about how we work.
Is it cheaper to use an energy broker or go direct to the supplier?
Going direct gets you one supplier's price on one day. A broker puts that supplier in competition with 30+ others for the same contract, which is where the saving comes from. Typical savings run 15 to 30 per cent against out-of-contract or single-supplier renewal rates, and the broker also catches the billing errors and mistimed renewals that quietly cost more than the headline rate. See what that looked like for print manufacturer Typocolor, then compare your own prices.
How much can a business save with an energy broker?
It depends on your current contract, your usage and where the wholesale market sits, but 15 to 30 per cent against out-of-contract or auto-renewal rates is typical. Purely Energy manages more than £100 million of annual energy spend across 2,000+ sites, so the tendering is backed by real volume and live market data rather than a rate card. See outcomes for Watford Grammar School and Good Taste Bakery.
How do I choose the right business energy broker?
Ask three things: is the broker whole-of-market or tied to a handful of suppliers, is the commission disclosed, and can they prove results with named clients. Independent accreditations matter too. Purely Energy is a certified B Corporation and holds ISO 9001 plus Cyber Essentials Plus (ISO 27001 certification is in progress), and it tenders across 30+ UK suppliers with no preferred-supplier deals. More on who we are.
Are energy brokers regulated in the UK?
Not in the same way suppliers are. Suppliers hold an Ofgem licence; brokers, as third-party intermediaries, do not. Ofgem does require brokers that serve microbusinesses to belong to a redress scheme such as the Energy Ombudsman, and reputable brokers commit to clear commission disclosure on top of that. The accountability we carry is our B Corp certification and our ISO 9001 audits, with ISO 27001 certification in progress. See our credentials and certifications.
Does an energy broker only handle gas and electricity?
The core is business electricity and business gas, but a full-service energy brokerage goes further: business water, solar and battery, carbon and compliance, and ongoing bill validation and monitoring. Consolidating them under one account manager is where multi-site businesses save the most admin as well as money. Explore the full range of services.
