Who owns Wave Utilities?
Wave is jointly owned by Anglian Water Group and Northumbrian Water Group through Wave Ltd, a 50/50 joint venture formed for the opening of the English business water market in April 2017. The licensed retail company that bills customers, Anglian Water Business (National) Limited, is a wholly owned trading subsidiary of Wave Ltd. The Competition and Markets Authority cleared the joint venture unconditionally on 2 August 2017.
What are Wave's deemed or out-of-contract water rates?
Wave places any customer receiving services without signed terms on a deemed contract, with the applicable charges published on its terms and pricing page, which we link to from this page. Rates differ by wholesale region (Northumbrian Water, Anglian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water areas each have their own business rates documents) and are updated when wholesale charges change, typically from 1 April each year. Separate default terms and charges apply to premises in Scotland. Check Wave's published rates documents for the figures that apply to your site.
Can Wave supply my region?
Yes, if your premises are in England or Scotland and you are a non-household customer. Wave retails water and wastewater services to businesses, charities and public sector organisations across both countries, a footprint it has held since the joint venture launched around the April 2017 English market opening. Physical supply always remains with your regional wholesaler; Wave handles billing, meter reads, account management and value-added services such as leak detection.
How do I contact Wave?
You can call Wave on 0333 207 9283, Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00. The company also offers live chat on its website, an online portal called My Account for bills, meter reads, payments and account changes, and a postal address at Wave, PO Box 745, Huntingdon, PE29 9PW. Email addresses for general, broker (TPI) and media enquiries are listed on the contact page at wave-utilities.co.uk.
Is Wave suited to multi-site businesses?
Yes. Wave offers consolidated billing across all locations, dedicated account managers for large industrial, commercial and public sector customers, and consumption data analysis to highlight problem sites. Its large business service page also lists leak find and fix, in-house trade effluent support and tailored water efficiency services. With over 300,000 business customers and roughly 19% market share at its formation, it is one of the largest national retailers handling multi-site portfolios.
What happens if Wave exits the market?
Customers would be transferred automatically to another retailer under Ofwat's interim supply arrangements, with no interruption to water or wastewater services, which are always delivered by the regional wholesaler. Wave's owners, Anglian Water Group and Northumbrian Water Group, were reported by Sky News in July 2023 to be exploring a sale of the joint venture, but no sale has been announced, and a change of owner would not alter customers' protections under the market codes.
Who runs Wave?
Lucy Darch is Wave's Chief Executive Officer, confirmed in interviews with Water Magazine in August 2024 and Business Focus Magazine in October 2025. Wave's own press pages also record her appointment to the water industry's Strategic Panel and to the board of MOSL, the market operator for the English business water market. The business is run from Durham, where the licensed retail company is registered at Northumbria House, Pity Me.
How big is Wave as a water retailer?
Wave serves over 300,000 business customers across England and Scotland and reported revenue of £554.9m with pre-tax profit of £8.6m for the year ended 31 March 2025, according to Insider Media. At its formation in 2017 the joint venture held approximately 19% of the market. A post on Wave's own website in November 2025 describes a 300-strong team.
