What are out-of-contract rates?

Out-of-contract rates (sometimes called deemed rates) are the unit price per kWh and daily standing charge a UK energy supplier applies when a business has no fixed contract in place, most often because a fixed term has ended without a new one being signed, or because a tenant has moved into a property where the previous contract has lapsed.

Suppliers set these rates unilaterally and update them quarterly in most cases. They are typically 30 to 70 percent higher than the fixed-rate offer the same supplier would quote a comparable business signing a new contract. Standing charges on out-of-contract supply tend to be 2 to 4 times higher than on a fixed contract, sometimes more.

For most UK businesses, out-of-contract supply is the single largest avoidable cost on an energy bill. Setting a calendar reminder six months before contract end and running a multi-supplier tender at that point typically saves between 15 and 30 percent of annual spend.

Out-of-contract rates: questions answered

What are out-of-contract energy rates?

Out-of-contract (also called deemed) rates are the unit price and standing charge a supplier applies when a business has no fixed contract in place, typically after a fixed term ends and a new one is not signed before the end date, or when a tenant moves into a property where the previous occupier's contract ended. They are set unilaterally by the supplier and are usually materially higher than fixed-rate offers.

How much higher are out-of-contract rates than fixed rates?

Across the UK B2B market in 2026, out-of-contract electricity unit rates typically run 30 to 70 percent above the fixed-rate offer for an equivalent business. Standing charges on out-of-contract supply also tend to be 2 to 4 times the fixed-rate level. Switching to a fixed contract almost always saves money once you cross even a few weeks of out-of-contract supply.

How often do suppliers update their out-of-contract rates?

Most suppliers publish a new schedule each quarter, with the effective-from date stamped on the PDF or webpage. Some adjust monthly when wholesale moves significantly. Always verify the figure on the supplier's own published document before relying on it: the table on this page links directly to each supplier's source.

Do out-of-contract rates vary by region?

Yes. Most suppliers publish a regional matrix that varies the unit rate and standing charge by Distribution Network Operator (DNO) area: there are 14 GB DNO regions for electricity and 13 Local Distribution Zones for gas. The figures on this page are midpoints or representative values; the supplier's own document gives the exact rate for your meter.

How do I get out of an out-of-contract supply with my current supplier?

You sign a new fixed contract, either with the same supplier or a different one. There is no termination fee on out-of-contract supply because there is no contract to terminate. Switching takes between 5 and 21 working days depending on the supplier and meter type. Purely Energy can run a tender across 30+ suppliers and present comparable quotes within 48 hours.

Can my supplier put me on out-of-contract rates without telling me?

Suppliers must give written notice of a contract end and the rates that will apply if you do nothing, usually 60 to 90 days before the end date. If you ignore the notice or your renewal letter, you will roll on to deemed or out-of-contract rates from the day after the contract ends. Setting a calendar reminder for 6 months before contract end is the single biggest cost-control measure most businesses miss.
