How this helps your business

To find who supplies your business gas, enter your postcode in the tool above to identify your Gas Distribution Network, then look up the registered supplier on the national Find My Supplier service at findmysupplier.energy using your postcode or MPRN, by calling the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524, or by checking a recent bill. There is no single free public website that names the supplier from the meter alone, so the quickest accurate answer combines the network lookup above with one of those supplier routes.

Network operator versus supplier: the distinction that trips businesses up

The Gas Distribution Network (GDN) and your supplier are two different companies, and conflating them is the single most common reason a business calls the wrong number. The GDN owns the physical pipes, runs the gas emergency line, and is fixed by your location: there are four GDNs in Great Britain, Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, SGN, and Wales & West Utilities. You cannot switch your GDN. Your supplier is the company that buys gas wholesale, sends your bill, and is the one you tender. The tool above returns the GDN; the supplier is what you confirm via Find My Supplier or a bill. The same network-versus-billing split applies to electricity, which our electricity and gas network lookup tool maps in full across all 14 distribution regions.

What the MPRN is, and where to find it

An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number, often called the M number) is the unique 6 to 10 digit code that identifies your gas supply point. It stays the same when you switch supplier, which makes it the most reliable handle for any lookup. It is printed on every gas bill and is searchable by postcode at Find My Supplier. If you do not have a bill to hand, our find my MPRN tool walks you through retrieving it, and the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 can read it out over the phone.

No bill, just moved in, or out of contract?

If you have just taken on a premises, you are billed by whichever supplier holds the registration, often on expensive deemed rates until you agree a contract. The fastest path is to enter the postcode at Find My Supplier to see the registered supplier and MPRN, then arrange a proper contract before those deemed or out-of-contract rates erode your margin. Knowing your contract end date is what unlocks a better deal: most business gas contracts only allow you to re-tender in a fixed window before they expire, and missing it rolls you onto default rates.

Why businesses ask Purely to confirm it

Finding the supplier is step one. Knowing whether you are paying a fair rate, when you can move, and how to time the wholesale market is where the savings sit. Purely Energy is a B-Corp certified UK business energy and water consultancy that manages 2,000+ sites and more than £100M of annual energy spend for 500+ business clients, with 30+ suppliers on our panel. We retrieve your supplier, MPRN, contract end date and current rate for free via a Letter of Authority, then tender the market on your behalf. Businesses we manage typically save 15 to 30%. We work for you, not the suppliers, with no hidden commissions. When you are ready, you can request a business gas quote or read more on our business gas procurement page.

Multi-site portfolios

If you run several premises, each has its own MPRN and may sit on a different supplier and contract end date, which makes a portfolio tender far more valuable than chasing sites one at a time. We consolidate the registrations, align renewal dates where it helps, and present a single position so your finance team sees the whole estate. Business gas supplier FAQs

Who is my business gas supplier?
Your business gas supplier is the company that sends your gas bill and the one you tender or switch. To find it, enter your business postcode in the tool above to identify your Gas Distribution Network, then look up the registered supplier using the national Find My Supplier service at findmysupplier.energy with your postcode or MPRN, call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524, check a recent bill, or let Purely Energy retrieve it for you via a free Letter of Authority.
Is the Gas Distribution Network (GDN) the same as my supplier?
No. The Gas Distribution Network (GDN) owns and maintains the pipes that carry gas to your premises and is fixed by your location. There are four GDNs in Great Britain: Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, SGN, and Wales & West Utilities. Your supplier is the company that bills you and the one you can switch. The tool tells you the GDN; the supplier is found via Find My Supplier or your bill.
What is an MPRN and how do I find it for business gas?
An MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number, sometimes called the M number) is the unique 6 to 10 digit number that identifies your gas supply point. It does not change when you switch supplier. You can find it on a gas bill, by entering your postcode at findmysupplier.energy, or by calling the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524. Our find my MPRN tool also helps you locate it.
How do I find my gas supplier without a bill?
If you have no bill, just moved into the premises, or are out of contract, enter your postcode at the national Find My Supplier service (findmysupplier.energy) to retrieve the registered supplier and MPRN, or call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524. For UK business premises, Purely Energy can also confirm your supplier, MPRN, contract end date and current rate via a free Letter of Authority.
Can a business switch its gas supplier?
Yes. Every UK business can choose its gas supplier from the 30+ suppliers on the market. If you are inside a contract you switch at the contract end date; if you let a contract lapse you fall onto more expensive deemed or out-of-contract rates, so knowing your end date matters. Purely Energy works for you, not the suppliers, with no hidden commissions, and tenders the market on your behalf.
Why does my gas contract end date matter?
Your contract end date sets your switching window. Most business gas contracts only let you give notice and re-tender in a fixed window before they end, and missing it rolls you onto deemed or out-of-contract rates that are typically far higher. Knowing your supplier and end date early lets Purely Energy time the market and secure a better rate; businesses we manage typically save 15 to 30%.
Which official database powers the gas supplier answer?
Gas supply point records are held in the central gas registration system operated by Xoserve (the MPRS), and the public-facing route is the national Find My Supplier service at findmysupplier.energy. These are the authoritative sources for who is registered as the supplier against your MPRN, which is why we point you to them rather than to a guess.
